Getting there
North Melbourne is conveniently located 20 minutes walk from Melbourne's CBD. Walk to the Queen Victoria Market along Elizabeth Street, then further towards North Melbourne via Victoria and Errol Street.

Public Transport
Tram
• Route 59 (Airport West): travels along Elizabeth Street and down Flemington Road which is the northern boundary of the precinct.
• Route 57 (West Maribyrnong): travels along Elizabeth Street
then Victoria, Errol, Queensberry and Abbotsford Streets, then down Flemington Road
• Route 55 (West Coburg): travels from William Street down Peel St and Flemington Road and then into Royal Park (Melbourne Zoo) at Abbotsford Street, just skimming the boundary of North Melbourne
Bus Services
Services that cover the North & West Melbourne area are: -
• Route 216, 219 and 220- with stops along Spencer St West Melbourne (from Caroline Springs to Brighton Beach and from Sunshine to Gardenvale)
• Route 401- from North Melbourne station (stopping only at the Royal Melbourne Hospital) to Melbourne University.
• Route 402- from Footscray to East Melbourne (St Vincent's Hospital) via Canning, Shiel, Haines, Errol, Arden and Wreckyn Sts North Melbourne.
Trains
Services through North Melbourne transport hub operate from both Southern Cross and Flinders Street Stations stopping at North Melbourne, Macaulay, Kensington and Flemington Bridge stations.
The new North Melbourne Station will open on Monday 16th November, signalling the completion of the $38.6m upgrade project. The project has transformed North Melbourne Station and brought huge improvements to commuters at what is one of Melbourne’s busiest rail interchanges.
Thanks to a new concourse, with lifts and escalators, people will be able to move around the station at either end of the platforms. This has also delivered improved access for those with specific needs, and North Melbourne Station now fully complies with Disability Discrimination Act (1992) standards.
Other features of the station that may assist people with specific needs include:
• New lifts to the concourse to provide an interchange to platforms as an alternative to existing ramps at the heritage end of the station
• DDA compliant toilets at the new station building;
• Hearing Loops on new concourse, platforms and new station building;
• New tactiles on existing platforms
• Re-grading of existing platforms (with exception of the heritage area);
• Braille signage to the lifts will be installed in the near future.
New canopies mean people are protected from the weather, and we’ve made the station safer, with resurfaced platforms and new digital CCTV.
New passenger information displays mean that as soon as you arrive at the station you can see where you need to be, and get there quicker. This will improve passenger flows at the station and reduces dwell times for trains, which results in more punctual services for everyone.
From Monday 16th November the Route 401 bus stop will move to the new North Melbourne Station concourse located on Dryburgh Street so that passengers can transfer easily between train and bus services.
The new Route 401 bus stop will include shelters for waiting passengers and have capacity for three buses to cater for high passenger demand during peak periods.

North Melbourne is in close proximity to many of the major hospitals within the confines of the City of Melbourne. These include The Royal Melbourne, The Royal Children’s and The Melbourne Eye Hospital. Meanwhile along Royal Parade are many pathology and research centres, many attached to Melbourne University. The MacFarlane Burnett Research Centre commemorates a famous Australian medical researcher. |
